In addition to its traditional hydrogeological drilling services, BDC has undertaken a number of large scale open loop geothermal projects, and looks forward to the continued growth in this industry sector.
For example, Bunbury Drilling Company completed the drilling and construction of the deep geothermal production and injection wells used for heating the 4 swimming pools at Challenge Stadium in Perth, WA.
Challenge Stadium was at the time, the largest swimming sports arena in the Southern Hemisphere in terms of water volume. As such, to meet the heating requirements the system's production and injection wells have been constructed with a capacity of 40 l/sec.
The implementation of this geothermal system has significantly reduced the annual energy costs for Challenge Stadium and has reportedly reduced CO2 emissions by approximately 1,300 tonnes per annum.
Bunbury Drilling Company was also early to recognise the benefits of Ground Source Heat Pumps using geothermal closed loops to maximise energy consumption efficiency for heating and cooling of residential and commercial buildings and has sent staff to undertake specific training in the USA. This has resulted in Bunbury Drilling Company becoming one of the first Drilling Contractors in Australia to be accredited for vertical loop installation by the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA).
